Insurance agents & carrier comparison
When does it make sense to shop for new coverage after a claim?
Most homeowners never think about their insurance carrier until they need one — and a roof claim is often the first real test of whether your current policy and carrier are actually a good fit. A few situations where shopping around is worth the time:
- Your premium increases significantly at renewal following a claim, and you want to confirm whether that increase is in line with the broader market or specific to your current carrier.
- Your claim experience revealed gaps you didn't know about — for example, discovering your roof was covered on an ACV basis, or that a wind/hail deductible was higher than you expected. See our guide to understanding your policy for the terms worth checking.
- You're not confident your dwelling coverage limit (Coverage A) still reflects what it would actually cost to rebuild, especially after a large regional claim event drove up local construction costs.
- You simply haven't compared your policy against the market in several years — pricing and underwriting appetite for roofs of a given age or material shift over time, sometimes significantly, by carrier.
Shopping for coverage doesn't have to mean switching — sometimes the result is confirming your current policy is already competitive. But it's worth doing periodically regardless, and especially after any claim.
